Do imported photos stay in Apple Photos?
Check vault imports, iCloud Photos sync, Recently Deleted, and independent backups before removing original photos.

Importing and moving are different
Adding a photo to a vault usually creates a separate copy. Do not assume that an import removes the source photo, an iCloud copy, or a copy already shared with someone else. In PhotoSafe, open the imported image inside the vault before changing the original in Apple Photos.
Check the vault copy before removing an original
Begin with a non-sensitive sample. Open the imported image at full size, check that it is the intended file, and confirm that it opens again after you lock and reopen the vault. Make sure you understand the supported way to recover access on a replacement phone. A visible thumbnail alone does not establish that you have a usable, recoverable copy.
Check iCloud Photos before removing an original
On your iPhone, review Settings, your Apple Account, iCloud, and Photos to see whether this device synchronizes its photo library. With iCloud Photos enabled, removing an image from Photos affects the same library on other connected devices. A synchronized Mac or iPad should not be treated as an untouched spare copy. Check your actual settings and keep a separate safe copy if you need one.
iCloud Photos and iCloud Backup are different
Apple distinguishes a synchronized Photos library from a device backup. Photos already synchronized through iCloud Photos are not duplicated in your iCloud Backup. An enabled device-backup switch therefore does not establish that a deleted library image has another recoverable copy. This describes Apple Photos; do not infer that PhotoSafe has cloud synchronization or that a device backup can recover a forgotten vault PIN.
Review Recently Deleted and shared copies
Deleted items normally remain in Apple Photos’ Recently Deleted album for up to 30 days. Permanently removing an item there eliminates that recovery route, so avoid doing so merely to finish a cleanup checklist. Review shared albums, message attachments, exports, and other apps separately: a local vault cannot recall an image that another person already received.
A practical PhotoSafe cleanup checklist
Confirm the vault import and reopening with a sample first. Review synchronization settings, check the recovery plan for important images, and retain an independent safe copy where needed. Only then decide whether to remove an original from Photos. If you are replacing a phone, keep the old device intact until you have verified the new one. Pause and use PhotoSafe support if any import or access result is unclear.
